Andy Murray: "I need to become more consistent"

Andy Murray admits that he needs to add consistency to his game following his 6-3 6-2 defeat against Santiago Giraldo in the Madrid Open.

Andy Murray has admitted that he needs to add more consistency to his game having been knocked out of the Madrid Open in the third round.

The British number one, who returned to action this week following a month out, suffered a 6-3 6-2 defeat at the hands of Santiago Giraldo on Thursday evening.

"He played very well from start to finish and didn't make many mistakes," Murray is quoted as saying by The Express. "I didn't make it hard enough for him in the second set. Towards the end, I didn't put enough pressure on him to force him to make errors.

"He dictated most the points and deserved to win. It's tough, because some days just now I'm playing well, and then the next day I'm not playing well at all. Sometimes in matches I'm playing really well for periods, and then other times not great at all.

"I need to become more consistent. My best tennis or my base level has to stay the same for a lot longer. It's not necessarily a case of going out there and practising loads of stuff on the court. I need to be mentally stronger and mentally a bit more switched on for longer periods in matches."

Murray is back in action next week when he takes part in a Masters 1000 event.
