Preview: Stevenage vs. Peterborough United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's EFL Cup clash between Stevenage and Peterborough United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

The second round of the 2022-23 EFL Cup sees Stevenage welcome Peterborough United to Broadhall Way on Tuesday night.

Stevenage upset the odds with a 2-1 victory over Reading in the previous round of matches, while Peterborough eased past the threat of Plymouth Argyle.

Match preview

Peterborough came out on top on home turf for the fourth game running following a 4-0 victory over Lincoln City at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Jack Marriott and Jonson Clarke-Harris both grabbed two goals apiece for Grant McCann's men in a what was largely a one-sided affair.

Having racked up 12 of the last 15 points available, Posh currently sit second in the League One table and trail league leaders Ipswich only by a point.

Next up is the challenge of an opposing outfit who are yet to win any of the most recent five meetings between the teams and have just one win from the previous seven encounters.

Off the back of an away triumph in the opening round of the EFL Cup, Tuesday's visitors now go in search of yet another huge scalp on the road.

Stevenage made it five wins from their last six games across all competitions as they claimed a 2-1 victory over Carlisle when the sides faced off on Saturday.

Steve Evans's men stormed to a commanding two-goal lead thanks to strikes from Kane Smith and Max Clark before Kristian Dennis pulled one back on the stroke of half time.

As a result, Boro are second in the League Two standings, level on points with leaders Leyton Orient who however have a superior goal difference.

With eight wins and one draw in their last nine home games, Tuesday's hosts have proven themselves to be a huge force to reckon with on their own patch and will be looking to keep the juggernaut rolling.

Team News

Max Clark was a real attacking menace for Stevenage last time out where he supplied a goal and an assist apiece, making him one to look out for.

Nineteen-year-old Saxon Earley could return to the lineup for this one after sitting out each of his side's last two games completely despite being named on the bench.

Jamaican forward Jonson Clarke-Harris will be looking to continue his fine form in front of goal as he aims to score for the third game in a row.

Ryan Broom remains without an appearance since early July and the midfielder is also expected to miss Tuesday's contest with a knee injury.

Stevenage possible starting lineup:
Ashby-Hammond; Sweeney, Vancooten, Piergianni; Smith, Read, Reeves, Clark; Rose, Norris, Roberts

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:
Bergstrom; Thompson, Edwards, Kent; Ward, Taylor, Fuchs, Thompson, Burrows; Marriott, Clarke-Harris

SM words green background

We say: Stevenage 1-0 Peterborough United

Both teams are on an impressive run of results coming into the game and they will be confident of emerging victorious here. We are backing a narrow win for the home side in what should be a close contest over the course of the 90 minutes.
