Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly have to sell players first before they can strengthen their squad this summer, amid significant financial constraints.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly looking to strengthen their defence this summer, but they will have to sell players first, amid significant financial constraints.

In November, Spurs announced losses of £63.9m and like many clubs, they have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the Daily Mail, some intermediaries have already been told that Tottenham must sell before they buy in the hope of raising funds and freeing up wages.

A first-choice goalkeeper, a right-back and a central defender are three positions that Spurs will be looking to strengthen this summer.

Left-back Danny Rose – who has fallen down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho – is one player who is set to leave the club when his contract expires in June, while there are also doubts regarding the futures of captain Hugo Lloris, Serge Aurier and Juan Foyth, who is currently on loan at Villarreal.

Welsh winger Gareth Bale, who has failed to live up to expectations since temporarily joining from Real Madrid, has already stated that he is set to return to the Spanish capital when his £250,000-a-week loan deal expires.

Another loanee is striker Carlos Vinicius and he is also set to leave Tottenham, as owner Daniel Levy refuses to meet Benfica's £36m asking price.
