Preview: Morecambe vs. Cambridge United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Morecambe and Cambridge United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Cambridge United face a long trip to Morecambe on Tuesday night and the visitors will be looking to collect consecutive victories.

Meanwhile, the hosts will bid to end a winless run that has spanned five league games, which has left Morecambe just above the relegation zone in 19th place.

Morecambe are outside the relegation zone on goal difference, and four defeats in their previous five league game has dented their confidence.

They have faced a tough run of fixtures, with four of their last five encounters taking place away from home, and they have lost all four of those away fixtures.

Away to Oxford United on Saturday, Cole Stockton equalised after Steve Seddon had given the hosts the lead, but Mark Sykes and Matty Taylor scored to condemn Morecambe to a 3-1 defeat.

If Morecambe are to avoid the drop, a defence that has conceded 28 goals this season needs to improve, with 14 of those goals conceded in the last five league games.

Although, Stephen Robinson will be hopeful of a positive result on Tuesday given that 11 of their 16 points this term have resulted from home fixtures.

Cambridge head into the encounter in 15th place, after accumulating 19 points this season, which leaves them five points clear of the drop zone.

The U's will have been boosted by ending a seven-game winless run at the weekend, when they emerged victorious at home to AFC Wimbledon.

In that encounter, Jensen Weir scored his first goal for Cambridge, with his strike proving to be the winner as the U's clinched a 1-0 victory.

Failure to convert draws into victories has been an issue for Cambridge this season, with seven of their 15 league games ending all square.

Five of those draws have come in their previous eight fixtures, and Mark Bonner's task is to turn one point into three on a consistent basis to help his side avoid a relegation battle.

Team News

Robinson brought Wes McDonald into the starting lineup for the Oxford clash, and the 24-year-old is expected to keep his place after playing the full 90 minutes on Saturday.

After scoring his 11th league goal of the season at the weekend, Stockton is now the joint-highest top goalscorer in League One, and the forward will lead the line for Morecambe on Tuesday.

Goalkeeper Tomas Holy joined Cambridge on an emergency loan after regular goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov picked up an injury, and Holy is set to start his third consecutive league game in midweek.

After scoring the winner at the weekend, Weir is expected to keep his place in the Cambridge midfield.

In fact, Bonner could name an unchanged side, with the hosts looking for consecutive league victories.

Morecambe possible starting lineup:
Andresson; Cooney, O'Connor, Delaney, Leigh; Jones, Diagouraga, Phillips; Ayunga, McDonald, Stockton

Cambridge United possible starting lineup:
Holy; Williams, Okedina, Jones, Iredale; Digby, Weir, Hoolahan; Smith, Tracey, Ironside

We say: Morecambe 1-1 Cambridge United

With the two sides only separated by four points, Tuesday's encounter is likely to be close and given the fact Cambridge have drawn five of their last eight games, we think this contest will also end all square.
