Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants Jesse Lingard to return to Old Trafford at the end of the season.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested that Jesse Lingard will not be allowed to leave Old Trafford on a permanent basis this summer.

The 28-year-old has been in impressive form for West Ham United since joining the Hammers on loan in January, scoring eight times and registering four assists in nine appearances.

David Moyes's side want to sign the England international on a permanent deal, while Arsenal have also been credited with an interest ahead of the upcoming market.

However, Solskjaer has said that he wants Lingard to return to Old Trafford at the end of the season, seemingly ending West Ham's chances of acquiring him on a long-term basis.

"Jesse has been brilliant since he left. Selfishly we could have kept him because he's always got a part to play. He's a fantastic lad and Manchester United through and through. Not once did he moan or cause me a problem earlier in the season," Solskjaer told reporters.

"He came in and worked hard, he deserved to play more, that's why we let him go to West Ham. We welcome him back and I hope he goes to the Euros, I don't think that's beyond him.

"I hope he's got a strong finish in the league in him. It was different here because of the form of Bruno [Fernandes], who was playing in arguably Jesse's favourite position. But I'm delighted for him and we just wish him the best for the rest of the season until he comes back."

Lingard's existing deal at Old Trafford is due to expire in June 2022.
