Analysing Tottenham Hotspur's run-in

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the fixtures Tottenham Hotspur will have to play if the 2019-20 Premier League season resumes.

Despite having reached last season's Champions League final, Tottenham Hotspur face a fight to qualify for next year's competition should the Premier League resume after the coronavirus pandemic.

With nine games of the campaign remaining, Spurs sit in eighth position, seven points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea.

Given that the North Londoners are also out of the qualification places for the Europa League, manager Jose Mourinho may be content with earning a spot in the continent's secondary competition.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at Spurs' closing fixtures, assessing whether Mourinho's side should be fancied to progress up the standings.

Providing that the same schedule is used upon any resumption, Spurs will host Manchester United in their return game, looking to end a two-game losing streak against the Red Devils.

However, the narrow setback at Wembley Stadium in January 2019 is the solitary loss in the last seven games against United on home territory.

Although the next encounter at home to West Ham United looks favourable, Spurs have failed to emerge victorious in any of their last three home fixtures against their city rivals.

A trip to Bramall Lane to take on seventh-placed Sheffield United could also pose problems for Spurs, especially with the Blades knowing that maximum points could prove to be the difference when it comes to gaining European football.

Facing Everton and Bournemouth may represent an opportunity for Spurs to pick up some much-needed points, although they failed to win the corresponding games last season.

With four outings remaining, Arsenal are due to make the short trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Spurs looking to extend a four-match unbeaten streak in home games against their neighbours.

A visit to St James' Park - a happy hunting ground for Spurs - to face Newcastle United is due to be next, and Mourinho will want his team to build on prevailing in four of the last five games in the North-East.

A closing double-header at home to Leicester City and away to Crystal Palace represents a difficult finish for Spurs, especially versus the former who have already defeated them earlier in the season.

The average position of their remaining opposition is 10.44, perhaps an indication that Spurs have a more testing run-in than some of their nearest rivals.

Mourinho will also want to see an improved return after Spurs picked up just 12 points from the reverse fixtures earlier in the season.
