Preview: Fleetwood Town vs. Cambridge United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Fleetwood Town and Cambridge United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Fleetwood Town will be bidding to continue their impressive run of form when they welcome Cambridge United to Highbury Stadium in League One on Tuesday night.

The home side will bring a four-game unbeaten run in all competitions into the contest, while Cambridge recorded a 1-0 victory over Oxford United in the league on Saturday afternoon.

Fleetwood held second-placed Plymouth Argyle to a goalless draw on Saturday afternoon, with the result following three straight wins over Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton Athletic and Peterborough United.

Scott Brown's side booked their spot in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 success over Sheffield Wednesday before recording back-to-back victories over Charlton and Peterborough.

A total of 36 points from 31 matches has left Fleetwood in 16th position in the League One table, seven points clear of the relegation zone and 20 points off the playoff positions in the third tier.

The Fishermen have operated in League One since 2014, and a disappointing 2021-22 campaign left them in 20th position, level on points with 21st-placed Gillingham.

Fleetwood have shared the points with Cambridge in the last two meetings between the two teams, including a 1-1 draw when they last locked horns at Highbury Stadium in January 2022.

Cambridge, meanwhile, will enter this match off the back of a morale-boosting 1-0 victory over Oxford United on Saturday afternoon, with Lloyd Jones scoring the only goal of the match in the eighth minute.

Mark Bonner's side jumped one spot in the table on Saturday, moving above Morecambe into 22nd position, and they are now just one point behind 20th-placed Accrington Stanley.

Cambridge lost back-to-back games to Barnsley and Cheltenham Town earlier this month, but the win over Oxford would certainly have boosted confidence at a key stage of the campaign.

The Yellows, who finished 14th in League One last season, have struggled on their travels this season, boasting the second-worst away record, collecting just eight points from 15 matches.

However, Fleetwood have found it difficult in front of their own fans, only picking up 14 points from 15 matches, so the meeting will be between one of the poorest home records in the league and one of the worst away.

Team News

Fleetwood will be without the services of Scott Robertson due to the injury that the Englishman picked up in the early stages of the clash with Plymouth on Saturday.

As a result, Harvey Macadam is set to come in for a start, while Jayden Stockley is also pushing for a role in the XI, having featured off the bench last time out.

There are unlikely to be any alterations when it comes to the front two, though, with Carlos Gomes again likely to be joined by Jack Marriott.

As for Cambridge, head coach Bonner will need to assess the fitness of his squad following the 1-0 success over Oxford on Saturday afternoon.

However, there do not appear to be any fresh injury concerns for the visitors, so it would not be a shock to see the same starting XI take to the field for Tuesday's contest.

Sam Smith and Joe Ironside have scored 12 league goals between them this season, and the pair should continue in the final third of the field for this match.

Fleetwood Town possible starting lineup:
Lynch; Rooney, Holgate, Nsiala, Sarpong-Wiredu, Ndaba; Vela, Warrington, Macadam; Marriott, Gomes

Cambridge United possible starting lineup:
Mitov; Morrison, R Bennett, Jones; L Bennett, McGrandles, Digby, Brophy; Smith, Lankester, Ironside

We say: Fleetwood Town 1-1 Cambridge United

This is a really difficult match to call considering Fleetwood's problems at home and Cambridge's issues on their travels. The home side will enter this match in strong form, but we just have a feeling that Cambridge will be able to navigate their way to a welcome point on Tuesday night.
