Preview: Charlton Athletic vs. Port Vale - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's League One clash between Charlton Athletic and Port Vale, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

In their final home game of the 2022-23 season, Charlton Athletic will welcome Port Vale to The Valley for Saturday's League contest.

The Addicks will be looking for a response after losing to Morecambe last time out, while the Valiants have the chance to claim consecutive victories.

Charlton's four-game unbeaten home run came to a disappointing end on Saturday as relegation-threatened Morecambe ran out 3-2 winners.

Jesuran Rak-Sakyi equalised in first-half stoppage time to cancel out Cole Stockton's opener, but the Morecambe forward grabbed his second of the game after the break, before Jensen Weir added a third in the 64th minute.

Dean Holden's side managed to pull a goal back through Scott Fraser, but they were unable to find a late leveller, ensuring that they fell to a narrow defeat that leaves them in 11th position.

They will be hoping to maintain their top-half position, which would represent a slight improvement on last season's 13th-placed finish.

After losing 1-0 to Port Vale when the two sides met in November, Charlton will be keen to get revenge in their final home match of the season.

Port Vale, meanwhile, changed manager earlier this month after deciding to sack Darrell Clarke following a 3-2 away defeat to Lincoln City.

Andy Crosby was subsequently placed in interim charge until the end of the season, and his tenure began with a narrow 2-1 loss to promotion-chasing Ipswich Town.

However, he enjoyed greater success in Saturday's home meeting with Bristol Rovers, guiding the Valiants to their first victory since March 4.

First-half goals from Ellis Harrison and Tom Pett proved to be enough to seal a 2-0 victory that leaves them on the brink of securing their League One status.

Port Vale, who currently occupy 18th place, will now turn their attention to Saturday's meeting with Charlton, where they will be looking to end a nine-game winless away run.

Team News

Charlton have reported no fresh injury concerns, but they are still unable to call upon Lucas Ness, Corey Blackett-Taylor and Chuks Aneke.

The hosts are also without the services of Ryan Inniss, who will serve the final game of a three-match suspension.

After featuring as second-half substitutes against Morecambe, Tyreece Campbell and Fraser are expected to come into the starting lineup.

As for the visitors, Ben Garrity has been sidelined since March with an injury issue, and the midfielder is expected to miss out once again.

Harrison is a doubt after being forced off five minutes before half time in the 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers.

If the 29-year-old is unable to feature against Charlton then Jamie Proctor could be presented with a starting opportunity.

Charlton Athletic possible starting lineup:
Maynard-Brewer; Clare, Hector, Thomas, Sessegnon; Morgan, Dobson, Fraser; Rak-Sakyi, Campbell, Leaburn

Port Vale possible starting lineup:
Stone; Donnelly, Forrester, Smith; Worrall, Ojo, Pett, Benning; Wilson, Massey, Proctor

We say: Charlton Athletic 2-0 Port Vale

Port Vale would have taken confidence from Saturday's win against Bristol Rovers, but picking up a win at The Valley may prove to be a difficult challenge.

The Valiants have not won an away game since New Year's Day, and we think that Charlton will take advantage of Port Vale's away day struggles to claim all three points.
