Preview: Uruguay vs. Brazil - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's World Cup Qualifying - South America clash between Uruguay and Brazil, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Brazil will be looking to make it four wins from four matches in qualification for the 2022 World Cup when they face Uruguay in Montevideo on Tuesday night.

The Selecao currently top the South American qualification group with nine points, while Uruguay are fourth in the section, having picked up six points from their opening three fixtures.

Uruguay started their World Cup qualification campaign with a 2-1 victory over Chile on October 8 but then disappointingly suffered a 4-2 defeat to Ecuador in their second game five days later.

There was a degree of pressure on La Celeste heading into their clash with Colombia on Friday, but an impressive performance saw them run out 3-0 winners to move onto six points in the section.

Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani were both on the scoresheet in Barranquilla, while Darwin Nunez also registered in the second period to round off a strong display at Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Melendez.

Oscar Tabarez's side will now be looking to overcome Brazil in what is their final match of 2020, with South American qualification for the 2022 World Cup not due to resume until next March.

Uruguay have not actually beaten the Selecao since 2001, though, losing seven of the last nine meetings between the two nations, which is an indication of the size of their task on Tuesday night.

Brazil, meanwhile, will enter this match off the back of a 1-0 win over Venezuela, with Roberto Firmino coming up with the only goal of the contest in the 67th minute.

Tite's side were far from convincing in Sao Paulo but managed to pick up another three points to leave them top of the section, two points clear of second-placed Argentina.

Brazil opened their qualification campaign with a 5-0 win over Bolivia on October 10 before recording a 4-2 victory away to Peru four days later, and they will certainly be looking to top the group.

The Green and Yellows have not won a World Cup since 2002, though, and have exited the tournament at the quarter-final stage in three of their last four participations.

As mentioned, they have dominated the recent meetings with Uruguay, but the fact that the injured Neymar is not available for Brazil will certainly hand the home side confidence.

Team News

Neymar in action for Brazil on September 10, 2019© Reuters

Uruguay boss Tabarez is expected to keep faith with the majority of the side that started against Colombia, with Luis Suarez and Cavani set to continue in the final third of the field.

Diego Godin, Jose Gimenez and Lucas Torreira should also retain their spots in the side, but there could be a change in a wide area with Nunez, who scored off the bench against Colombia, potentially replacing Nicolas De La Cruz.

Jonathan Rodriguez and Mauro Arambarri are also options for change, but Tabarez is unlikely to shuffle his pack despite the relatively quick turnaround for this game.

As for Brazil, Neymar was released from the squad with a leg injury ahead of the Venezuela match, and there is no question that the 28-year-old's absence is a huge blow for the visitors.

The Selecao are also without the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Fabinho and Eder Militao, but an all-Premier League front three could again take to the field for this match.

Indeed, Firmino was joined by Richarlison and Gabriel Jesus against Venezuela, and it would not be a surprise to see Tite keep with the same attacking trident for this game.

Allan and Everton Ribeiro should keep their spots in midfield, but Aston Villa's Douglas Luiz is under pressure from Lucas Paqueta when it comes to a starting role.

Manchester United's Alex Telles is pushing Renan Lodi for the left-back spot, while Liverpool's Alisson Becker could again lose out to Manchester City's Ederson between the sticks.

Uruguay possible starting lineup:
Campana; Caceres, Gimenez, Godin, Vina; Nandez, Torreira, Bentancur, Nunez; Suarez, Cavani

Brazil possible starting lineup:
Ederson; Danilo, Marquinhos, T Silva, Lodi; Everton Ribeiro, Allan, Paqueta; Firmino, Richarlison, Jesus

We say: Uruguay 1-1 Brazil

Brazil will be determined to make it four wins in a row, but Uruguay were excellent against Colombia last time out and will be full of confidence. There has only been one draw in the last seven meetings between these two sides, but we are backing a 1-1 in Montevideo.
