Brett Emerton announces retirement

Former Blackburn Rovers midfielder Brett Emerton announces his retirement from football.

Former Blackburn Rovers midfielder Brett Emerton has announced his retirement after 18 years as a professional footballer.

The 34-year-old, who began his career with Sydney Olympic in 1996, spent nine seasons at Ewood Park after joining from Feyenoord in 2003.

He won 94 caps for Australia, while also helping the Dutch side win the UEFA Cup back in 2002.

"It was an absolute honour to represent my country and to be able to do it for 15 years and play in two World Cups (2006, 2010) is really special," he told reporters.

"I've had a fantastic career and I was incredibly fortunate to play professional football for 18 years but I know now is the right time to call it a day.

"I hope to be able to stay in the game moving forward and continue to contribute to Australian football."

Emerton left Lancashire for A-League outfit Syndey FC three years ago.
