Preview: Sheffield Wednesday vs. Sunderland - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Monday's League One clash between Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Sheffield Wednesday will try to overturn a one-goal deficit when they play host to Sunderland in the second leg of their League One playoff semi-final.

A 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light ensured that Sunderland enter Monday's contests with a slender advantage.

If Sheffield Wednesday are to keep their hopes of a return to the Championship alive then they must overturn a one-goal deficit.

The Owls finished in fourth place in League One after picking up 85 points from their 46 games, and as a result of their finishing position, they earned themselves home advantage for the second leg.

That could prove particularly crucial for Wednesday, who ended the season with the best home record in the third tier, with their 23 league games at Hillsborough yielding 16 victories.

They also finished the campaign with the best defensive record on home turf after conceding just 18 goals, while Sunderland were the only team to score more home goals than the Owls in League One.

With a win required for Darren Moore's side on Monday, the hosts can take confidence from the fact that they have won their last four matches at Hillsborough.

The visitors currently have their noses in front in the tie, after the Black Cats emerged victorious from the Stadium of Light on Friday thanks to Ross Stewart's goal in first half stoppage time.

The first-leg victory extended Sunderland's current unbeaten run to 14 matches, while it was also the sixth win that they have collected in their previous seven home games.

Sunderland, who have been in League One for four years, will be looking to hold onto their lead as they bid to reach the playoff final for the first time since the 2018-19 season.

With only a draw required to secure their passage into the playoff final, Alex Neil's side can take encouragement from their current seven-game unbeaten away run.

The Sunderland boss will also be pleased by the fact that his team have kept five clean sheets from their last eight away contests and another shutout on Monday would seal a place at Wembley.

Team News

Sheffield Wednesday could be without the services of Ciaran Brennan and Dominic Iorfa despite the pair making progress in their recoveries from injury.

Harlee Dean returned from injury to start in the first leg and the 30-year-old is expected to keep his place in the back three alongside Jordan Storey and Sam Hutchinson.

Despite losing the first leg, Moore could name an unchanged lineup, which would ensure that Saido Berahino and Lee Gregory continue to operate in the frontline.

As for the visitors, Carl Winchester is expected to miss out due an injury issue, while Nathan Broadhead remains a doubt after missing the first leg.

Callum Doyle is set to be on the bench once again after returning from injury to feature in the matchday squad on Friday.

Like their hosts, Sunderland could name an unchanged lineup, with Stewart set to continue in the frontline and the forward will be aiming to add to the four goals that he has already scored against the Owls this season.

Sheffield Wednesday possible starting lineup:
Peacock-Farrell; Storey, Dean, Hutchinson; Palmer, Byers, Bannan, Luongo, Johnson; Berahino, Gregory

Sunderland possible starting lineup:
Patterson; Wright, Batth, Cirkin; Gooch, Evans, O'Nien, Clarke; Roberts, Pritchard; Stewart

We say: Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 Sunderland

Sheffield Wednesday have won seven of their last eight home matches, and five of those victories have been won by two goals or more, highlighting Wednesday's dominance on home turf, and we think that the Owls will utilise home advantage to squeeze past Sunderland on aggregate.
