Former France, Chelsea and Newcastle United striker Loic Remy announces his retirement from professional football at the age of 36.

Former France, Chelsea and Newcastle United striker Loic Remy has announced his retirement from football at the age of 36.

The attacker became a free agent in the summer following a short-term stint with Brest in the second half of the 2022-23 season, in which he did not make a single appearance.

Remy struggled with injuries during his spell at the Stade Francis Le-Ble, and he confirmed to Amazon Prime Video that he would be hanging up his boots after a 17-year professional career.

The 36-year-old retires with a record of 140 goals from 407 competitive fixtures at club level, having come through the Lyon academy ranks to make his senior debut for Les Gones in 2006.

Remy failed to score in 19 matches for Lyon, but he was a part of two Ligue 1-winning squads at the Groupama Stadium, as well as collecting one Coupe de France crown and two Trophee des Champions titles.

Stints with Lens and Nice followed before Remy made a name for himself at Marseille, scoring 42 goals in 109 matches and winning two Coupe de la Ligue trophies, as well as a third Trophee des Champions honour.

Remy was the subject of an £8m move to Queens Park Rangers in January 2013 and scored six Premier League goals at Loftus Road in his first half-season in the top flight, before being loaned out to Newcastle United for the 2013-14 campaign.

While on the books at St James' Park, Remy notched 14 goals in 26 Premier League games and was named the club's Player of the Year, which earned him a switch to Chelsea after a proposed move to Liverpool fell through owing to a failed medical.

Remy became a Premier League and EFL Cup winner in his first season at Stamford Bridge, but he failed to hit the same goalscoring heights, coming up with 12 efforts in 47 matches before a forgettable loan spell with Crystal Palace.

The Frenchman also represented Las Palmas, Getafe and Lille in the latter stages of his career, and he was awarded the Ligue 1 Goal of the Season in the 2018-19 campaign, before representing Caykur Rizespor and Adama Demirspor in Turkey.

A 30-cap France international, Remy scored seven goals and provided one assist for Les Bleus, representing his nation at the 2014 World Cup and making two substitute appearances in Brazil.
