Late equaliser earns 10-man Charlton Athletic draw

Charlton Athletic equalise late on to share a 1-1 draw with Cardiff City in the Championship.

Charlton Athletic scored late on to share a 1-1 draw with Cardiff City despite playing the majority of the match with just 10 men at The Valley this afternoon.

Both sides were on the attack early on, but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock when Tom Adeyemi headed in from a Ben Turner ball forward.

Craig Noone had a chance to make it two for Cardiff when he tried to fire in after Aron Gunnarsson put the ball in the box, but the striker's finish was high.

Charlton's chances to get back into the match were dealt a blow when Callum Harriott was sent off for a late challenge on Noone.

Despite his dismissal, the home side came close before the break as George Tucudean attempted to slice the ball in from a tight angle, but David Marshall did enough to keep it out.

Cardiff piled forward early in the second half as they tried to make the most of their numerical advantage, but Gunnarsson had his shot saved.

The hosts responded as Johann Berg Gudmundsson won a corner when his effort was pushed behind, leaving Johnnie Jackson to hit the post from the resulting set piece.

Kenwyne Jones and Noone continued to put the Charlton defence under pressure, but were unable to increase Cardiff's lead ahead of the hour mark.

Igor Vetokele came off the bench despite carrying a knock to try to salvage a point for Charlton, and he forced a save after latching on to a rebound once Gudmundsson had been denied.

Adeyemi tried to put the result beyond doubt for the visitors, but the goal-scorer's finish from the middle of the box was straight at the keeper.

The save proved vital as Charlton immediately went down the other end, leaving Gudmundsson to pick out the top left corner with an effort from outside the box.

The result leaves the teams 10th and 11th respectively with the same number of points and goal difference.
