Preview: Burton Albion vs. Carlisle United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Burton Albion and Carlisle United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Round 33 of the 2023-24 League One season sees Burton Albion lock horns against Carlisle United at the Pirelli Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Both teams were beaten in their respective last outings and will be looking to get themselves back on track by securing all three points here.

Match preview

Burton Albion failed to pick up a third straight win as they fell to a 2-0 defeat against Northampton Town when the sides went head-to-head on Saturday.

Martin Paterson's men made a poor start to the contest and went into the break trailing by two thanks to strikes from Marc Leonard and Mitchell Pinnock.

As a result, the Yellow and Black Army have dropped down to 18th place in the League One table, five points clear of relegation danger having played one game more.

Awaiting them next is the challenge of an opposing outfit who are unbeaten in four of the previous five editions of this fixture across all competitions.

Off the back of consecutive defeats on home turf by a combined score of 3-0, Tuesday's hosts will be keen to turn things around in front of their fans.

Carlisle United were beaten for the eighth straight game in a 2-1 defeat against Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

Paul Simpson's men opened the scoring through Josh Vela before goals in either half from Chris Martin and Scott Sinclair turned the match on its head.

With 20 points amassed from 33 league outings so far, the Cumbrians remain rooted to the bottom of the standings, a whopping 14 points adrift of safety.

Currently on an 11-game winless run on the road, Tuesday's visitors have it all to do as they go in search of their first away triumph since October.

Team News

Adedeji Oshilaja made his return to action for Burton against Northampton last time out, and the defender is expected to retain his place for this one.

Twenty-one-year-old Kgaogelo Chauke remains a major doubt for the home side here, having missed each of the last four matches through injury.

Jordan Gibson will be aiming to come up with the goods once again after finding the back of the net for Carlisle in the reverse fixture.

Josh Vela has made a decent start to life for the visitors since his loan move from Fleetwood, and the Englishman is one to keep a close eye on.

Burton Albion possible starting lineup:
Crocombe; Hamer, Nsiala, Brayford, Sweeney, Bola; Oshilaja, Powell, Helm; Bennett, Ola-Adebomi

Carlisle United possible starting lineup:
Lewis; Armer, Mellish, Lavelle, Back; Charters, Neal, Vela; Gibson, Armstrong, Diamond

We say: Burton Albion 2-1 Carlisle United

Having endured a dismal start to 2024, Carlisle will be low on confidence heading into this one, and Burton will be looking to fully capitalise. We are tipping the hosts to come away with all three points, albeit by only a narrow margin.
