Preview: Rotherham United vs. Hull City - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's Championship clash between Rotherham United and Hull City, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Basement side Rotherham United will be bidding to record just their fourth Championship victory of the campaign when they welcome Hull City to the New York Stadium on Tuesday night.

The hosts are bottom of the table on 19 points, while Hull sit up in seventh position, with the Tigers only two points behind sixth-placed Sunderland in the race to secure a playoff spot.

There is no getting away from the fact that it has been a tough campaign for Rotherham, with a record of three wins, 10 draws and 17 defeats from 30 matches leaving them at the bottom of the table on 19 points.

The Millers are 12 points behind 21st-placed Huddersfield Town, which is a big gap to make up considering that they have only managed to record three league victories all season.

Leam Richardson's side will enter this match off the back of a 3-0 defeat at Leeds United on Saturday, with their last victory at this level of football coming against Middlesbrough on Boxing Day.

Rotherham, who finished 19th in the Championship last season, have the second-worst home record in the league this season, only picking up 15 points from 15 matches.

The Millers have also not beaten Hull at this level of football since December 2015, and they suffered a 4-1 defeat in the reverse match between the two sides last November.

Hull have not played in the Premier League since the 2016-17 campaign, spending time in League One since then, while they have finished 19th and 15th in their last two seasons in the second tier.

The Tigers have had a strong campaign to date, though, boasting a record of 13 wins, six draws and 11 defeats from 30 matches to collect 45 points, which has left them in seventh spot in the table.

Hull are only two points behind sixth-placed Sunderland with a game in hand and will certainly have their eyes on a playoff position this term.

Acun Ilicali's side have been victorious in two of their last three Championship matches, although they will enter this game off the back of a 1-0 home defeat to Swansea City.

Hull have picked up 20 points from their 14 away league matches this season, suffering just six losses in the process, and they will be the favourites on Tuesday against the side at the bottom of the division.

Team News

Rotherham have a fairly lengthy injury list at this moment in time, and there will again be at least six absentees for the basement side on Tuesday night.

Cohen Bramall, Grant Hall, Fred Onyedinma, Andre Green, Tyler Blackett and Shane Ferguson remain unavailable for selection, but the Millers have no fresh injury concerns.

Head coach Richardson is expected to resist the temptation to shuffle his pack following the reverse to Leeds, so a 5-4-1 formation is again likely to include Jordan Hugill at centre-forward.

Hull, meanwhile, will again be without the services of seven-goal Liam Delap due to a knee problem.

The Tigers will also be unavailable to call upon Jean Michael Seri, with the Ivorian midfielder preparing for Sunday evening's Africa Cup of Nations final.

Ozan Tufan has scored seven times in the Championship this season and will again feature in an advanced area, while there will be another start for on-loan Liverpool attacker Fabio Carvalho.

Rotherham United possible starting lineup:
Johansson; Kioso, Odoffin, Morrison, Peltier, Revan; Cafu, Tiehi, Clucas, Lindsay; Hugill

Hull City possible starting lineup:
Allsop; Coyle, Jones, Greaves, Giles; Morton, Slater; Philogene, Carvalho, Zaroury; Tufan

We say: Rotherham United 1-2 Hull City

Rotherham, despite their troubles this season, are capable of making this a tricky match for Hull. The Tigers have picked up two wins from their last three league games, though, and we are expecting the visitors to shade a close match on Tuesday to secure all three points.
