Nathan Redmond apologises for decisive penalty miss

Nathan Redmond says "sorry" for missing from the spot in England Under-21s' penalty-shootout defeat to Germany, but vows to learn from the experience.

England Under-21s winger Nathan Redmond has vowed to learn from his heartbreaking experience of missing a penalty in the shootout defeat to Germany at the U21 European Championship.

The Southampton ace saw his spot-kick attempt kept out by Julian Pollersbeck to deny the Young Lions a path through to the final, as they lost 4-3 in the sudden-death scenario.

Redmond was seen crying as he left the ground in Tychy more than an hour after full time but, despite the negative end to his time in the Under-21s fold, he is remaining upbeat ahead of the next chapter in his international career.

"Gutted to have lost the semi-finals last night on pens! Sorry. I will continue to keep learning from these experiences and try to improve as a player every day as usual," he posted on his Instagram account. "There is work to do and I'm OK with the mental and physical challenges that lie ahead.

"Anyone that knows me well enough know that I'm forever proud to wear the Three Lions shirt on my chest. It's sad to close a chapter on my England youth team football in that way but I've gained more than I've lost from the U16s right through to the U21s.

"A lot of special memories so on that note I would like to thank every single manager, coach, medical staff, kit-men, security guards and players that I worked with, that helped me learn and grow as a person and a player."

Redmond, restricted to a substitute appearance in Tuesday's semi-final due to injury, will link up with club side Southampton next month for pre-season training.
