Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero: 'Being backup has benefited me'

Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero says that being backup at Stamford Bridge and Manchester City has benefited his career.

Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero has suggested that he relishes his role as backup to Thibaut Courtois at Stamford Bridge.

During the summer, Caballero had a number of options after leaving Manchester City, but the experienced stopper decided to make the switch to the Blues to act as understudy to Courtois.

Caballero has only made 11 appearances in all competitions, but the Argentine has said that he remains highly motivated to earn a regular spot in the starting lineup.

The 36-year-old is quoted by the club's official website as saying: "To compete with great goalkeepers like Joe Hart, Claudio Bravo and Thibaut Courtois has made me stronger and a better goalkeeper.

"Some keepers find this position uncomfortable, but I have been working really hard to achieve the level of this kind of keeper, and I feel stronger and better today.

"If I just went to training and passed the days and weeks, this kind of easy position is not good for me. I have always fought to play and I try to do that with Thibaut every single day, and for this I have achieved a lot of good performance in the last few years."

Caballero is expected to start when Chelsea face Southampton in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday afternoon.
