Niko Kovac: 'Bayern Munich could still reach Ousmane Dembele agreement'

Bayern Munich coach Niko Kovac believes that securing Ousmane Dembele's signature could hinge on Neymar returning to Barcelona.

Bayern Munich will reignite their pursuit of Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele if the Spanish giants succeed with a mooted attempt to sign Brazil striker Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain, manager Niko Kovac has revealed.

Barca were reported last week to have turned down a £62m bid from Bayern for the 22-year-old French flyer, who could solve Kovac's quandary following the retirements of longstanding wingers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery.

Speaking at the unveiling of new signing Jann-Fiete Arp, Kovac called Dembele "a great player" and added that he has not given up on signing Manchester City hotshot Leroy Sane.

The Bayern boss said: "If Barca finally bring Neymar back from PSG, it could increase the possibility of reaching an agreement for Dembele."

Neymar has experienced an uneven run of form since joining PSG from Barca for around £200m in the same year, failing to fire the French champions to Champions League glory.

The emergence of 20-year-old Kylian Mbappe, who helped France to 2018 World Cup glory alongside Dembele and top-scored in Ligue 1 last season, has overshadowed Neymar's star billing.

Dembele became the fifth-most expensive signing in history when he switched from Borussia Dortmund to Barcelona for more than £135m in 2017.
