Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 Barnsley

Wolves record their first win of the Championship season after overcoming Barnsley 3-1 at Molineux.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have recorded their first win of the Championship season by overcoming Barnsley 3-1 at Molineux.

It was the home side who started the better and they took the lead after eight minutes when Stephen Ward finished from close range to score his first goal since January.

Barnsley were not without their chances, however, and Marlon Harewood came close with a long-range effort on the 10-minute mark.

Both sides continued to create opportunities as the half developed, with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Ward coming close with efforts after 30 minutes.

Matt Jarvis continued to cause the away side problems late in the opening period, but Wolves could not turn their dominance into a second goal.

Harewood remained Barnsley's biggest threat early in the second period, and he fired just wide of the target after 50 minutes.

However, Wolves secured their second on the hour mark when Ebanks-Blake converted from close range after good work from Kevin Doyle.

It was three for the home side 10 minutes later when David Edwards headed home from a Slawomir Peszko cross.

Wolves had chances to extend their lead in the latter stages of the 90 minutes, but it was the away side who added a consolation late on through Tomasz Cywka.
