Preview: Liverpool Women vs. Everton Ladies - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Women's Super League clash between Liverpool Women and Everton Ladies, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Local rivals Liverpool Women and Everton Ladies will both be competing for bragging rights when they go head-to-head in Sunday's Merseyside derby at Anfield.

The Reds have begun their Women's Super League campaign with consecutive victories, while the Toffees are still waiting for their first points of the season.

After finishing in seventh place in their first season back in the WSL, Liverpool are keen to push on and move into the top half of the table this term.

The early signs are positive for the Reds, who began the season with a surprise 1-0 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

They backed up that result with a 2-0 home win against Aston Villa last weekend following goals from two summer signings Marie Hobinger and Natasha Flint.

Although the Reds fell to a 2-1 defeat to Leicester City in Wednesday's League Cup meeting, they will head into the weekend in a positive mood as one of two teams yet to drop points in the WSL this term.

They are currently sitting at the top of the table alongside the Foxes, and a win in the Merseyside Derby would be the perfect way to maintain their 100% start to the WSL season.

In contrast to their local rivals, Everton have endured a sluggish start to the campaign, having suffered defeat in all three of their competitive matches.

The Toffees were beaten 2-1 by Brighton & Hove Albion in their league opener, before they fell to a 1-0 away loss against Leicester City.

Brian Sorensen's side turned their attention to the midweek League Cup tie against Man City, where a 21st-minute effort from former Everton player Jess Park gave the Citizens a slender half-time lead.

Bunny Shaw doubled Man City's advantage within two minutes of the restart, and while Toni Duggan pulled a goal back in stoppage time, it proved to be too little too late as the Toffees fell to another narrow defeat.

Everton may be low on confidence following three straight defeats, but they will look to draw upon their experience from last season's trip to Anfield in September 2022 when they cruised to a 3-0 victory over their Merseyside rivals.

Team News

Liverpool Women manager Matt Beard reacts on May 3, 2023© Reuters

Liverpool boss Matt Beard has confirmed that he is still unable to call upon the injured trio of Niamh Fahey, Leanne Kiernan and Shanice van de Sanden.

Sophie Roman Haug, who arrived from Roma in the summer, has been made to wait for her debut due to a broken nose, but she is expected to be on the bench at Anfield.

After scoring in her last two appearances, Flint could be included in the starting lineup for Sunday's Merseyside derby.

As for the Toffees, Sorensen has revealed that defender Elise Stenevik and forward Martina Piemonte will miss out due to calf and knee injuries respectively.

Karen Holmgaard is in contention to return to the matchday squad, but her twin, Sara Holmgaard, remains sidelined with an injury issue.

Having missed Everton's opening three games of the season, Dutch striker Katja Snoeijs is available for the short trip to Anfield.

Liverpool Women possible starting lineup:
Laws; Fisk, Bonner, Clark; Koivisto, Nagano, Hobinger, Hinds; Holland; Kearns, Flint

Everton Ladies possible starting lineup:
Ramsey; Bjorn, Finnigan, Veje; Payne, Vanhaevermaet, Galli, Hope; Bennison; Sorensen, Snoeijs

SM words green background

We say: Liverpool Women 2-1 Everton Ladies

Everton collected four points from last season's two Merseyside derbies, but we think that they will struggle to take anything from Sunday's contest.

Liverpool have made an impressive start to the campaign, and with momentum in their favour, we think that the hosts will edge out the Toffees at Anfield.
