An 83rd-minute goal from Luca Antonelli gave Genoa a 1-0 win over Inter Milan in Serie A this afternoon.

Both sides had plenty of chances to break the deadlock, but heavy rain made shooting conditions difficult at both ends of the pitch.

However, the midfielder was able to head in from a corner in the closing stages to extend the team's unbeaten run of home to seven matches.

Good afternoon! It's just half an hour until kickoff at Stadio Luigi Ferraris where Genoa will be looking to take advantage of Inter Milan's recent poor run. Let's start with a look at the teams for this afternoon's clash.

GENOA STARTING XI: Perin, Antonini, De Maio, Marchese, Antonelli, Cofie, Vrsaljko, Sturaro, Gilardino, Fetfatzidis, Bertolacci.

INTER STARTING XI: Handanovic, Campagnaro, Rolando, Jesus, Jonathan, Kuzmanovic, Camviasso, Nagatomo, Alvarez, Palacio, Milito

GENOA SUBS: Bizarri, Donnarumma, De Ceglie, Sokoli, Sampirisi, Biondini, Stoian, Cabral, Pierre, Calaio, Centurion, Konate

INTER SUBS: Castellazzi, Carrizo, Zanetti, Andreolli, Ranocchia, Samuel, Kovacic, Guarin, Mudingayi, Taider, Botta

Unsurprisingly, Inter's top goalscorer Rodrigo Palacio starts up front. He already has 10 goals in the league for the visitors this season. Genoa's Alberto Gilardino isn't far behind though, he has eight in this campaign.

Despite just the one win in their last seven, Genoa have been formidable at home this season, and are unbeaten at Stade Luigi Ferraris since September.

Ahead of this match, president Erick Thohir has been asking for Inter's fans to be patient, despite them sitting 20 points behind league leaders Juventus. He told reporters: "The fans need to be patient. You don't build a business in one or two months, you have to wait several years. Inter have improved with respect to last season. I think fourth place is a realistic aim for us. We will nevertheless have to keep an eye open to see what the other teams do. But we cannot forget that we have slipped a few times this year."

Discipline has been an issue in recent weeks for today's hosts, with three players sent off in their last seven games. Francesco Matuzalem was dismissed in last week's 4-0 defeat to Roma, so is banned for today's game.

The players are making their way onto the pitch ready for kickoff.

PREDICTION! Genoa may see this as a good chance to cause a bit of an upset, but I think Inter have a strong enough team to secure a narrow win. I'm going for a 2-1 win for the visitors.

Genoa get the match underway.

There was a pitch inspection just prior to kickoff due to heavy rain in Genoa overnight. The ball isn't moving brilliantly, but it's definitely playable. Genoa try to attack from the kickoff, but Inter quickly take possession and try to force their way forward, but Rolando is penalised for a foul on Gilardino.

It's still the visitors seeing the majority of the ball, but they've not posed much of a threat in front of the Genoa goal so far. However, a good ball into the box for Palacio gives Inter their first look at goal, but his scuffed finish is easily saved.

Palacio appears to be dropping back a little into midfield as the rain starts to poor again in Genoa. It looks like Ricardo Alvarez is playing a more attacking role for the visitors.

Genoa apply pressure in the Inter half for the first time since the opening minute, but Luca Antonelli chooses to take the shot himself from just outside the box rather than playing it in for his teammates, but he slices it well wide.

BOOKING! Isaac Cofie is the first player to receive a yellow card for colliding into Ricardo Alvarez.

SAVE! Mattia Perin makes a superb save to stop Inter from taking the lead after Jonathan smashes the ball towards the Genoa goal from close range. The visitors get the corner, but the visitors make the clearance.

The rain is starting to become a bit of a problem here, as puddles are forming on the pitch. The ball is still bouncing and moving reasonably well though.

CHANCE! Giovanni Marchese tries his look from range, sending it a strike from 30 yards out. It moves at the last minute, but Handanovic watches it all the way and makes the save.

Genoa have their first corner of the match, but Rolando gets to it first and heads the ball to safety. On the counter-attack, Palacio tries to lob the ball over Perin, but his effort goes high.

CHANCE! A fantastic turn in the box from Milito sets up Jonathan, but the midfielder's first touch is poor, allowing Cofie to get a tackle in as he gets the ball away, forcing it wide.

SUB! It's a blow for the visitors as Ricardo Alvarez is forced off with a knee injury that he picked up in the run up to Jonathan's last chance. Mateo Kovacic takes his place.

Gilardino bursts into the box looking for a chance for Genoa, but he's a little too quick, and if flagged for offside. He took his shot anyway, smashing the ball into the back of the net for a bit of target practice. Incidentally, the ball practically came to a stop in front of the water-logged Inter six-yard box.

CHANCE! This is end-to-end stuff at the moment as Palacio slices the ball in from a tight angle for Inter, but it's just wide.

CHANCE! This is such an open contest at the moment! No sooner have Inter had a chance, Genoa are pressing at the other end. This time it's Andrea Bertolacci with the effort, but he can't force it inside the left post.

The wet pitch almost gifts Genoa an opening goal, as Jonathan misses a clearance when the ball sticks in a puddle. Sturaro, who is unmarked, tries to smash it in, but Handanovic is able to make the save.

The conditions are proving tricky for the defenders as well as the keepers. Rolando has the ball with Gilardino chasing him down. He considers attempting to pass it back to Handanovic, but deems it too risky and gives away the throw in.

Genoa are bearing down on the Inter goal, but the pitch it too wet for them to get the shot away. Sturaro is fouled by Kovacic, but the referee waves for the players to play on, with the hosts eventually winning a corner.

After a decent attacking spell from Genoa, Inter force their way back down the other end, but a pass down the wing for Nagatomo has too much pace, and goes behind for a goal kick. It certainly looks like Genoa's half is much dryer.

Jesus Juan gives away a free kick in a dangerous position, which Antonelli curls into the box, but Handanovic gets to it first. The hosts quickly get the ball back in, but the keeper just gets a hand to Marchese's header

CHANCE! Fetfatzidis has a chance for the hosts but it's deflected wide for a corner. Marchese tries on overhead kick, but he kicks Cambiasso in the face while attempting the move, giving Inter the free kick.

Genoa try to get on the attack again with half time just a few moments away, but Inter hold firm at the back.

HALF TIME: Genoa 0-0 Inter Milan

Well it was certainly an entertaining and open first half, but the sides head in goalless. Inter appeared to get off to a better start, but Genoa looked stronger once the rain started to fall.

Let's take a look at some of the statistics from the opening 45 minutes. The possession was evenly split between the two teams, while they also both had six shots with two on target. Genoa probably would have had a couple more effort on target had it not been for the puddles inside the Inter area. Shooting towards the dryer half of the pitch should help them after the break.

Understandably, the ground staff are on the pitch at half time working on the area in front of what will be Genoa's goal in the second half.

The players are starting to make their way back out for the second half.

Well, the players are ready to get back underway, but there's no ball! The referee has to signal to the sideline to get one brought onto the pitch.

The game gets back underway.

CHANCE! Inter have a great opportunity just moments into the second half, as Kovacic plays in Palacio, but the ball is slowed by the puddles, so the striker has to adjust at the last minute, and sends his shot wide.

Jonathan brilliantly keeps the ball alive on the edge of the area before winning a corner, but Gilardino is back to help clear the delivery for Genoa.

CHANCE! It looks like the water is starting to build at the other end of the pitch now too, and Gilardino bursts into the Inter box, but loses control of the ball when it hits a puddle, allowing Inter's defenders to catch up with the pacy striker and clear the danger.

Inter try to get the ball back down the other end, but the moves comes to nothing when Jonathan taps it out. Neither side have really looked like taking control of this match since the restart.

The visitors put in a long ball for Milito, but he's easily out-muscled by Cofie, who clears the danger for the hosts.

BOOKING! Sime Vrsaljko is shown a yellow card for a high challenge on Campagnaro. Meanwhile, it looks like Fredy Guarin is getting ready to come of for Inter.

CHANCE! Gilardino picks up the ball from a superb Sturaro cross, but he mis-times his shot, allowing Handanovic an easy save.

BOOKING! The yellows are starting to stack up for Genoa now as Bertolacci goes into the book for charging into Milito.

SUB! Guarin does indeed come on for the visitors, with Kuzmanovic, who has had a quiet game, making way.

CHANCE! From nowhere, Fetfatzidis finds himself in space on the edge of the Inter box, and unleashes a curling effort, but Handanovic just manages to tip it over the crossbar.

CHANCE! Inter a back on the attack, and there's a scramble in the box as Perin makes quick-fire saves from Milito and Guarin, before Marchese gets it clear.

BOOKING! Sturaro is the fourth Genoa player to go in the book for bringing down Palacio. It also gives the visitors a free kick from a dangerous position.

Jonathan wastes the chance, taking a touch from the free kick to give himself a better angle before firing the ball towards the Genoa goal, but he gets too much under the ball, and it goes well high.

BOOKING! Jesus Juan is the first Inter player to be shown a yellow for an aggressive challenge.

SUB!Paolo de Ceglie is the first change for the home side, with Stefano Sturaro making way.

Jonathan clears from a Genoa corner, but it's quickly played back in and falls for Marchese, but his shot lacks power. However, it wouldn't have counted anyway, as a late flag went up against Gilardino.

CHANCE! Perin has an easy take, but he appears to lose his footing in the muddy puddles, but Antonini spares his blushes with the clearance.

SUB! Iaonnis Fetfatzidis, who has probably been Genoa's best player this afternoon, makes way for Moussa Konate.

Antonini makes another good clearance at the back for Genoa as Guarin sends in a dangerous looking cross. The right-back has a solid game for the home side.

CHANCE! Palacio heads the ball low trying to squeeze it under Perin, but the keeper rushes out to make the save, and slides at least five yards in the mud after making the catch.

CHANCE! Perin denies Palacio again after Cambiasso plays the ball back in, although he may have been able to take the shot on himself.

GOAL! Genoa 1-0 Inter Milan (Antonelli)

The home side have a corner, and it drops to Antonini and Antontelli, but it's the midfielder who climbs highest to head it past Handanovic.

BOOKING! Moussa Konate is booked for diving after a collision with Juan Jesus. It seems harsh as there was definitely a shove from the Inter defender, who has already been booked.

SUBS! The visitors realise Juan is living on thin ice so use their final sub take him off, with Ruben Botta coming off the bench.

Palacio tries to get himself into a goal-scoring position again as Inter send in a high ball for the striker, but he can't control it, going behind for a Genoa goal kick.

SUB! The hosts have made their final change, with Emanuele Calaio taking over from Gilardino, who has put in a mighty shift this afternoon.

CHANCE! Palacio is going to have nightmares about Perin tonight as the Genoa keeper saves an effort from the Inter striker for the third time in this half after Guarin sent it a superb cross.

Inter have three minutes of stoppage time to find an equaliser.

Genoa are actually attacking in the final moments rather than defending the lead. Konate takes it into the box, but Handanovic manages to hold on.

FULL TIME: Genoa 1-0 Inter Milan

So a late goal gives Genoa all three points in a closely-fought match with Inter Milan in wet conditions, extending their unbeaten run at home to seven matches.

With other teams around them winning this afternoon, the result leaves Genoa 10th in the Serie A table, while Inter Milan remain fifth.
