Freiburg beat Augsburg to climb out of bottom three

Jonathan Schmid and Nils Petersen fire Freiburg out of the Bundesliga relegation zone with a 2-0 win over Augsburg.

Goals from Jonathan Schmid and Nils Petersen have taken Freiburg out of the Bundesliga relegation zone with a 2-0 victory over Augsburg.

The result puts Freiburg clear of 16th-placed Hamburger SV on goal difference, while Augsburg missed the chance to put the pressure on the sides chasing Champions League football as they slipped to a second successive defeat.

A sluggish start from Augsburg ensured that the hosts were on top for much of the first half, and it could have been a much more comfortable afternoon had Marwin Fritz not got a hand to Schmid's powerful strike.

Augsburg forward Raul Bobadilla came close to finishing a tight first half with a moment of magic as he evaded a couple of challenges before unleashing a low effort to force Roman Burki into a fine save.

The visitors started the second half brightly, but it was Freiburg who created a great chance when Admir Mehmedi found the space to head just over.

Freiburg finally opened the scoring with just under 20 minutes remaining when Oliver Sorg spotted the run of Schmid, who took a touch before finishing emphatically.

Petersen wrapped up the win late on as Vladimir Darida led a counter-attack before teeing up his teammate for a simple finish.
