Derby County boss Steve McClaren hails "valuable" Rotherham United point

Steve McClaren warns his Derby County players that they cannot afford to repeat the defensive display witnessed against Rotherham United if they are to gain promotion.

Steve McClaren believes that the battling display produced by his players to rescue a 3-3 draw at Rotherham United this evening could be one of the "most valuable points" Derby County pick up.

The Rams missed out on the chance to go top of the Championship having failed to register a win at the New York Stadium, although having found themselves two goals behind in the second half a draw represented a decent outcome.

"That could turn out to be one of the most valuable points we get," McClaren told reporters. "Not just the point, not losing, but the manner in which we came back in the last half-hour.

"I thought once we got the third we would go on and win the game but you can't win football matches if you concede three goals like we did. "They were poor goals to concede, not like us.

"Credit to Rotherham, they played with a fierceness and tempo and we didn't match it. But fortunately we've got a good bench with people who can change the game. We have got a good squad and that is a great comeback, but the first hour, we can't do that. At the business end you can't take a day off."

Derby, who still managed to climb into the automatic promotion zone with the point, return to action next weekend when they take on Sheffield Wednesday.
