Chelsea vs. Liverpool: Head-to-head record and past meetings

Ahead of Sunday's EFL Cup final between Chelsea and Liverpool, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.

Chelsea and Liverpool will lock horns in the EFL Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool are the most successful side in the history of the League Cup, lifting the trophy on nine occasions, with their last success coming in 2022, while Chelsea have won the trophy five times, last triumphing in 2015.

This contest is a repeat of the 2021-22 final, with Liverpool winning 11-10 on penalties after the two teams could not be separated in normal or extra-time.

Two of the powerhouses of English football will now lock horns for the trophy once again, with Mauricio Pochettino looking to deliver his first silverware since arriving as Chelsea boss.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 158
Chelsea wins: 48
Draws: 39
Liverpool wins: 71

These two powerhouses of English football have locked horns on 158 occasions throughout history, and it is Liverpool that lead the head-to-head record 71 wins to Chelsea's 48, while there have also been 39 draws.

Liverpool are actually currently on an eight-game unbeaten run against Chelsea in all competitions, including a 4-1 victory in the Premier League when the two sides last locked horns at the end of January.

Chelsea's last success over Liverpool proved to be a 1-0 win at Anfield in the league in March 2021, and the Blues have only beaten the Reds twice in their last 16 matches in all competitions.

Sunday's final will actually be the 10th time that these two sides have locked horns in the League Cup.

Two of those matches have been finals, with Liverpool beating Chelsea on penalties to win the 2021-22 EFL Cup after the two sides could not be separated in general play.

However, Chelsea were 3-2 winners after extra time in their final back in 2005, with the London club's team including the likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba.

Liverpool have also scored more goals (253) than Chelsea (216) in their previous 158 matches, while the two leading goalscorers in this fixture both represented the Merseyside team, with Ian Rush managing to score 10 times against Chelsea, while Roger Hunt boasted nine goals.

Chelsea's highest goalscorer in matches against Liverpool is Drogba, who struck nine times while turning out for the Blues against the Reds.

Liverpool have been the dominant team in this fixture throughout the years, but three of their last four meetings have finished level, while the pair also met in the final of the FA Cup final in 2021-22, with Liverpool making it a domestic cup double that term with another penalty-shootout success over their rivals.
