Preview: Charlton Athletic vs. Rotherham United

Sports Mole previews the Championship clash between Charlton Athletic and Rotherham United.

Charlton Athletic could move into the top six of the Championship if they beat Rotherham United at The Valley.

Meanwhile, the Millers travel to South-East London still searching for their first victory of the season as they look to climb off the bottom of the table.

Charlton's start to Guy Luzon's first full season in charge has followed up on the promise shown in the early months of the Israeli coach's reign.

Luzon took over from Bob Peeters last January and helped to turn around the club's fortunes on the pitch before making a unbeaten start to the current campaign.

The Addicks lost that unbeaten record with an away defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out.

Luzon's side remain outside the top six on goal difference only, but boast a perfect record at The Valley so far this season.

Charlton are looking to make it three wins from three in the league, having already won against Hull City and Queens Park Rangers.

Their defeat at Molineux was also the first time the Addicks had conceded more than one goal in a league game this season, and they will hope to continue their solid defensive start.

The club have decided not to offer ex-Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant a contract after he had a trial with the South London outfit.

Rotherham United

Millers boss Steve Evans famously donned a sombrero and flip-flops at Elland Road on the final day of last season after United managed to confirm their stay in the Championship.

However, with Rotherham firmly rooted to the bottom of the Championship this term, that status appears to be very much under threat, with the manager's job rumoured to be on the line.

Evans is adamant that he has the full confidence of the United board, despite only picking up one point in Rotherham's opening five games. The Scottish manager has also suggested that he is "not afraid of the sack".

The Millers boss has also found himself needing to explain why he sent keeper Kelle Roos back to parent club Derby County.

However, Evans has already moved to bolster his goalkeeping options with the signing of Lee Camp from Bournemouth.

He has also stripped Greg Halford of the club captaincy, with Lee Frecklington assuming the mantle.

On the field, the Millers will need to snap out of a run of three consecutive defeats if they are to climb out of the bottom three.

Team News

Should Charlton decide to freshen up their side, they may look to offer a start to Johnnie Jackson, who was fit enough to make the bench against Wolves.

However, with Luzon insisting that his team were worthy of a point that day, the Addicks boss may decide to retain the same starting lineup, with Chris Solly captaining the side.

Meanwhile, the Millers could give a debut to Camp in goal, while Frecklington should play his first game since being announced as club captain.

Rotherham also face a decision over whether to recall Joe Mattock after he sat out the 3-1 defeat at home to Fulham.

Charlton Athletic possible starting lineup:
Pope; Solly, Bauer, Diarra, Fox; Gudmundsson, Cousins, Kashi, Bergdich; Ahearne-Grant, Makienok

Rotherham United possible starting lineup:
Camp; Buxton, Collins, Halford, Richardson; Maguire, Green, Frecklington, Newell; Clarke-Harris, Derbyshire

Head To Head

Other than last season's meetings between the sides, both of which ended in draws, the teams haven't met since January 1983.

However, Rotherham do have a good record against the Addicks, having lost only one of their last nine

Indeed, the Millers have also twice beaten Charlton 5-1 in the 32 encounters, although the last of those thrashings came in 1982.

We say: Charlton 2-0 Rotherham

The bookmakers have Charlton as even-money favourites and their solidity, combined with Rotherham's poor run of results, suggest that they are right to give them a short price. We have plumped for a comfortable home win.
