Kyle Edmund beats David Ferrer in Vienna Open first round

British number three Kyle Edmund is through to the second round of the Vienna Open with a straight-sets win over David Ferrer.

Kyle Edmund has recorded an impressive win over David Ferrer to earn a place in the second round of the Vienna Open.

Twelve months ago in this tournament, Edmund was forced to withdraw from a clash against the Spaniard through injury, but the British number three avoided such difficulties in powering to a 6-2 7-6 victory on Tuesday afternoon.

Edmund dominated for much of the contest in Austria, with two breaks of serve coming in the opening set and the 22-year-old establishing an advantage in the second.

Ferrer managed to strike back in order to take the set to a tie-break, but Edmund controlled much of the breaker before securing his progress by a 7-5 scoreline on his second match point.

Edmund - who has dropped down to 63rd place in the world rankings - will play either Dennis Novak or Thomas Fabbiano in the last 16.
