Cardiff's Vincent Tan accuses Wigan chairman Dave Whelan of being a "racist"

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan hits out at "racist" Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan and claims that the businessman has hired a "racist" manager in Malky Mackay.

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan has described Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan as a "racist" man who has appointed a "racist" manager in Malky Mackay.

In December last year, Tan sacked Mackay amid reports of a fallout between the pair, and months later it emerged that the Cardiff owner had sent the FA a document containing alleged offensive text messages written by the Scotsman.

Mackay is now under an FA investigation for allegedly having the conversations of a racist, homophobic and sexist nature with former Cardiff head of recruitment Iain Moody.

This week, following almost a year out of management, Mackay was hired as Wigan's new boss, which sparked anger from anti-racism group Kick It Out.

After Mackay's appointment, Wigan chairman Dave Whelan was accused of making anti-semitic remarks after he claimed that Jewish people "chase money more than everybody else", while also using the word "chink", in a newspaper interview.

"I think he insulted the dignity of all Jewish people," Tan told BBC Sport. "I think he insulted the dignity of Chinese.

"This is a racist chairman hiring a racist manager. I hope that stops at two racists in Wigan, not snowballing to 2,000 or 20,000 racists in Wigan."

Whelan apologised for any offence by claiming that he has "hundreds" of Jewish friends.
