Andy Carroll scores winner as West Ham end winless streak against Southampton

Andy Carroll scores the winner as West Ham United fight back from a goal down to beat Southampton and end their eight-game winless streak in the Premier League.

Andy Carroll came off the bench to score the winner this evening as West Ham United fought back from a goal down to beat Southampton and end their eight-game, two-month winless streak in the Premier League.

Southampton, who came into the match having thumped now-leaders Arsenal 4-0 on Boxing Day, took the lead inside a quarter of an hour.

Shane Long's cross appeared to be stabbed home by Dusan Tadic, but replays showed that Hammers defender Carl Jenkinson made the vital touch so it went down as an own goal.

The Saints continued to look dangerous in the remainder of the first half, especially through Long and Sadio Mane, but they could not find a second to increase the advantage.

West Ham equalised midway through the second half when a clearance hit Michail Antonio on the head and looped in, the winger's first goal since a summer move from Nottingham Forest.

The winner arrived 10 minutes later as Carroll, sporting a new haircut and making his return after two weeks out, headed in from close range after Antonio's initial effort came back off the underside of the bar.

The big striker was relieved to see the ball go in after he missed a golden chance to score earlier in the second half.

West Ham, who had drawn five in a row before today's game, leap up from 11th to seventh with the win, while Southampton remain in the bottom half in 12th.
