Christian Eriksen 'came close to Tottenham Hotspur move in January'

Christian Eriksen reportedly came close to leaving Inter Milan and joining former club Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window.

Christian Eriksen was reportedly close to leaving Inter Milan and joining former club Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window.

The Danish international has struggled to settle down to life in Italy and has found it difficult to play regularly in Antonio Conte's side.

Spurs were understood to have been interested in bringing the 29-year-old back to the club on loan, however Gazzetta Dello Sport claim that the London outfit were unwilling to pay a compensation fee demanded by Inter, which saw the move collapse.

The request from the Italian side was made clear to Tottenham at the start of January transfer window but they never changed their stance, even though Spurs agreed to pay the player's wages.

Since the winter window has passed, Conte has expressed his delight at Eriksen's recent turnaround in fortunes at San Siro, after handing the midfielder more game time over the last month.

Eriksen made over 300 appearances for Tottenham during a seven-year spell with the club, scoring 69 goals and providing 89 assists.
