Portsmouth up to fourth after 2-0 win against Northampton Town

Portsmouth record a 2-0 win over Northampton Town to go fourth in League Two.

Portsmouth moved up to fourth in League Two after a 2-0 win against Northampton Town at Fratton Park on Tuesday evening.

Jed Wallace's effort gave Pompey the lead but the goal owed a lot to great work from Nicky Shorey, who collected the pass from Ben Chroley before cutting back to his teammate to fire home.

Craig Westcarr then doubled the lead for the home side seven minutes before the break when he slotted into the bottom left corner with a smart finish.

Ivan Toney perhaps had Northampton's best chance of the first half on 40 minutes, but his effort ended up going wide from the edge of the box.

The home side had a chance almost immediately after the restart, but Nigel Atangana's effort flew just over the crossbar.

John-Joe O'Toole spurned a decent opportunity for the visiting side on the hour mark, before Toney against went close.

The lively Antangana struck a post on 77 minutes with a curling effort before O'Toole saw his shot saved late on.
