Newcastle United go fifth with West Bromwich Albion win

Newcastle United edge past West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at home to move up to fifth in the Premier League.

Newcastle United have registered a 2-1 home win against West Bromwich Albion to climb up to fifth in the Premier League.

Alan Pardew's side went ahead in the 36th minute when Yoan Gouffran headed home after Boaz Myhill had punched Yohan Cabaye's header straight up in the air.

The Baggies restored parity eight minutes into the second half through Chris Brunt, who slammed home from close range after collecting Shane Long's flick-on at the back post.

However, Moussa Sissoko put Newcastle back in front in the 57th minute with a right-footed shot from outside the West Brom box after picking up Loic Remy's headed pass.

The hosts came close on two occasions during the remainder of the contest but could not add to their tally, although it did not matter in the end as they bagged all three points St James' Park with the 2-1 victory.
