Middlesbrough boss Garry Monk reportedly tells midfielder Stewart Downing that he is free to leave the Riverside Stadium.

Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing has reportedly been told that he can leave the Riverside Stadium this summer.

The North-East outfit have just appointed Garry Monk as their new boss after a combination of Aitor Karanka and Steve Agnew failed to keep the club in the Premier League.

Monk is yet to make any additions as he continues to assess his options but according to Sky Sports News, he has informed Downing that he does not feature in his plans.

The 32-year-old has spent two spells at the club, with his latest stint bringing 83 appearances in all competitions since 2015, while he missed just eight matches in the top flight during the most recent campaign.

However, it appears that Monk is looking to bring a fresher look to his squad and Downing looks likely to leave the club in the coming months.
