Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam says that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has some "hard decisions" to make regarding his first-team squad.

Jaap Stam has suggested that Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should make sweeping changes to his first-team squad.

United have failed to qualify for next season's Champions League, and it has resulted in speculation regarding a number of high-profile additions and departures.

Stam has said that 'everything must be re-evaluated' at Old Trafford, with the Dutchman being in favour of several new faces being signed during the summer.

The former defender told Sky Sports News: "I think we definitely could do with some more quality up front, in midfield and the back four as well. You want a squad that is competitive towards each other. Everyone needs to push each other to get the maximum out of everyone - to achieve something.

"As manager and as a club you need to have a look at that. After the last couple of seasons and how everything is going, I think it is good to re-evaluate everything in the team.

"At the end of the day the most important thing is to achieve the goals you set out, sometimes you need to make hard decisions to do that."

Stam has backed a pursuit of Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt, who reportedly may be interested in the move.
