On-loan forward Wout Weghorst reportedly empties his locker at Besiktas, as the striker attempts to force a move to Manchester United.

Wout Weghorst has reportedly already emptied his locker at Besiktas, as the striker attempts to force a move to Manchester United this month.

The 30-year-old appears to have emerged as Man United's leading target in January, with the Red Devils looking to boost their forward line before the end of the window.

A move for Weghorst is complicated by the fact that he is only on loan at Besiktas from Burnley, and the Turkish outfit are said to have the option to sign him on a permanent basis for around £8.5m this summer.

The Netherlands international appeared to say goodbye to the Besiktas supporters when he scored in their 2-1 victory over Kasimpasa in the league on Saturday.

However, Weghorst's actions led to criticism from Besiktas sporting director Ceyhun Kazanci, who insisted that the Turkish side would not let him leave without a fight.

"I don't understand why Weghorst said goodbye to the fans, why he made such a move. He is our football player right now. Our contract expires at the end of the season," Kazanci told Fanatik.

"If Manchester United or any other team wants Weghorst, they will meet with Burnley anyway. Burnley will then contact us and discuss the terms of separation. If we accept, the contract will be terminated.

"Otherwise, it will go on until the end of the season. He can't just go. There will have to be a reward for us to approve the separation.

"I'll give an example. Burnley told us, 'We made a deal with this team for Weghorst. We give you half of the transfer fee.' This may be a different condition. Then we'll sit down and talk."

Burnley are not believed to have a recall clause in the current deal, which further complicates a move for the striker, who scored twice against Argentina in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup.

According to journalist Serdar Saridag, Weghorst is attempting to force a move to Man United by clearing out his locker at Besiktas' training ground.

The forward has been in strong form for the Turkish giants during the 2022-23 campaign, scoring nine goals and registering four assists in 18 appearances in all competitions.

Weghorst has struggled to show his best form for Burnley, though, only scoring two goals and registering three assists in 20 appearances in all competitions, with all of those outings coming in the Premier League.

The Dutchman had an impressive record for Wolfsburg ahead of a switch to Turf Moor, scoring 70 goals and registering 22 assists in 144 appearances in all competitions.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, both Weghorst and Man United are confident that a solution can be found to allow the forward to make the move to Old Trafford.
