Burnley picked up their first point back in the Premier League this afternoon by holding Louis van Gaal's Manchester United to a goalless draw at Turf Moor.

David Jones struck the crossbar inside three minutes for the hosts, but neither side could break the deadlock as United were left still waiting for their first win under their new boss.

Here, Sports Mole takes a look at who impressed during an intriguing encounter in Lancashire.

BURNLEY

Goal

Tom Heaton: Made a fine save to deny Robin van Persie in the first half, but that was one of only two shots on target that he had to deal with. A quieter afternoon than he would have expected. (7/10)

Defence

Kieran Trippier: Perhaps fortunate not to give away a penalty in the first half, but another solid display from the right-back. (7/10)

Michael Duff: Kept the likes of Rooney, Van Persie, Mata and Di Maria relatively quiet all game with a solid display at the back. (7/10)

Jason Shackell: Another unflinching performance from the centre-back, who was not overawed by the impressive talent up against him. (7/10)

Ben Mee: Decent display on the left as he prevented Valencia from making any headway. Blocked plenty of crosses from the winger, although that was as much down to poor play from the United man as good play from Mee. (7/10)

Midfield

Scott Arfield: Another bright performance from the midfielder, who looked like Burnley's most dangerous player at times. Has made an impressive start to the season. (7/10)

Dean Marney: Made a vital contribution by clearing a Van Persie effort off the line, and was also effective in the middle of the park all afternoon. (7/10)

David Jones: Very impressive display from the former United youngster. Rattled the crossbar with a wonderful free kick after three minutes and tested De Gea with another effort later in the game too. (8/10)

Matt Taylor: Good performance from the experienced midfielder, who had an easier time of things with only one player on the right flank to worry about. (7/10)

Attack

Lukas Jutkiewicz: Showed good awareness to pounce on an underhit Evans back-pass, but missed the resulting chance. Did not get too much joy in the final third himself, but acted as a good linking player. (7/10)

Danny Ings: Was unable to really trouble the defence too much, despite United looking shaky at times. Was taken off with just over 10 minutes remaining. (6/10)

Substitutes

Ashley Barnes: Survived a penalty appeal during his 12 minutes on the field, but was barely involved other than that. (6/10)

Steven Reid: Replaced Taylor with two minutes remaining and picked up a yellow card not long after. No time to make an impact. (6/10)

MAN UTD

Goal

David de Gea: Made a couple of crucial saves, including one to spare the blushes of Evans early on. Was a mere spectator for the free kick that hit the bar, but otherwise one of his side's better performers. (7/10)

Defence

Jonny Evans: Looked like he had a mistake in him all game. Sold De Gea short with a poor back-pass just a minute after clumsily giving away a free kick that saw Burnley hit the bar. The clean sheet was in spite of him rather than because of him. (5/10)

Phil Jones: Part of a defence that never truly looked comfortable, although Jones himself looked the most assured of the three. May be the only one of the defence to keep his place in a fully-fit side. (7/10)

Tyler Blackett: Still learning at this level, and it showed at times. Sent a few simple passes astray and did not help with the nerves at the back, but avoided making any glaring individual errors. (6/10)

Midfield

Antonio Valencia: Got the ball, worked space for a cross and drilled it into the first man. The same old story time and time again from Valencia. (6/10)

Darren Fletcher: Floated one ball over the top for Van Persie to flick goalwards, but other than that was fairly anonymous in midfield. (6/10)

Angel di Maria: Promising debut for the Argentine, without setting the world alight. Created a couple of good chances in the first half with nice play, but was only able to last 70 minutes. A good addition to the side, but perhaps not what United needed most. (7/10)

Juan Mata: Struggled to get into the match at times, although that was not always his fault as the defence launched a number of long balls forward, bypassing the Spaniard. (6/10)

Ashley Young: May have earned his side a penalty in the first half, but other than that did not have much of an impact on the game. (6/10)

Attack

Wayne Rooney: Struggled to get into the match against a solid Burnley defence. Was given limited service due to the number of long balls, but still an underwhelming display. (6/10)

Robin van Persie: Was denied by a good save in the first half having controlled Di Maria's pass nicely inside the box. Looked like United's most likely source of a goal, although that isn't saying much. (6/10)

Substitutes

Anderson: Replaced Di Maria for the final 20 minutes but had minimal impact on the course of the match. (6/10)

Danny Welbeck: Came on in the 73rd minute for what could be his final United appearance. Looked to inject some pace into the attack but couldn't make the required difference. (6/10)

Adnan Januzaj: Replaced the injured Mata with three minutes remaining and had no time to show what he can do. (6/10)
