Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo confirms that the French champions "thought about" moving for Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo has confirmed that the French champions "thought about" moving for Lionel Messi during this summer's transfer window.

Messi recently informed Barca that he wanted to leave the club this summer before announcing on Friday that he would be spending at least one more season at Camp Nou.

Manchester City were believed to be the favourites to sign the 33-year-old, but PSG were also strongly credited with an interest, with the French side's head coach Thomas Tuchel talking up a potential move.

Leonardo has revealed that the Ligue 1 champions looked into signing the Argentina international before the announcement at the end of last week.

"When we found out that [Messi] wanted to leave Barcelona, we thought about it," Leonardo told Canal+. "We wondered if it would be possible to make the signing. Players like that are completely out of the ordinary."

Messi has a contract with Ronald Koeman's side until June 2021.
