Liverpool's former sporting director Michael Edwards is reportedly close to agreeing a deal to take up a position within Fenway Sports Group.

Liverpool's former sporting director Michael Edwards is reportedly on the brink of a return to the club.

The Reds are currently preparing for a new era, with Jurgen Klopp set to leave his role as manager at the end of the season.

While Liverpool are searching for Klopp's replacement, they are also on the lookout for a new sporting director after Jorge Schmadtke departed at the end of the January transfer window.

Edwards had been linked with the position, but he was unwilling to return to the club in a similar role after spending nearly six years as Liverpool's sporting director before leaving in the summer of 2022.

However, a recent report claimed that Liverpool's owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) had not given up hope of convincing Edwards to return to the club.

According to The Athletic, the 44-year-old is now on the verge of agreeing a deal to take up a senior role within FSG.

The report claims that talks are currently ongoing, with Edwards expected to make a final decision on his future by early next week.

While he is poised to take up a higher position inside FSG, the role would give him oversight of the club's football operations.

If he decides to accept the job, it is currently unclear what it would mean for his current work with Ludonautics – a sports advisory company founded by Liverpool's former director of research Ian Graham.

Meanwhile, Richard Hughes is expected to become Liverpool's new sporting director if Edwards takes control of Liverpool's football operations.

Bournemouth recently confirmed that Hughes will leave his role as the club's technical director at the end of the current season.

The former Cherries midfielder has been linked with the sporting director position at Newcastle United after Dan Ashworth was recently placed on gardening leave.

Roma have also shown an interest in Hughes, but Liverpool are expected to win the race to secure his services as long as Edwards finalises his return to the club.

Edwards is believed to be a huge admirer of Hughes, who has built an impressive reputation in his leadership role with the Cherries.
