Gonzalo Higuain fires Napoli into top three of Serie A

Gonzalo Higuain's goal is enough for Napoli who move into the top three of Serie A with a 1-0 win away to Lazio.

Napoli moved into the top three of Serie A with a 1-0 win over Lazio this afternoon.

Gonzalo Higuain's 10th goal of the campaign was enough for the visitors, who withstood second-half pressure from Lazio.

The Argentina international struck after 18 minutes when he squeezed the ball home from a tight angle after good work from Dries Mertens in the build-up.

Lucas Biglia almost levelled things up with a long-range effort that flashed narrowly wide before Marco Parolo crashed a header onto the crossbar.

Luis Cavanda wasted a good opportunity for the home side when he fired in a tame volley from around six yards out.

Lazio pressed for an equaliser in the second period, but the home side were guilty of wasting a number of decent openings with long-range efforts that didn't threaten the goal.

Rafael Benitez's side were content to soak up pressure from Lazio with the intent of countering and Jose Callejon was unlucky with an acrobatic effort on 86 minutes.

Callejon should have wrapped up the result in stoppage time when Marek Hamsik fired across a ball but the Spaniard somehow conspired to chest the ball wide.
