Marseille edge past Evian TG

Marseille see off Evian TG in their Ligue 1 clash at the Parc des Sports.

Marseille have come from behind to beat Evian TG in their Ligue 1 clash at the Parc des Sports.

Andre-Pierre Gignac missed a great chance to give his side the lead with only six minutes played when he got himself in a tangle and failed to find the target from a good position.

The hosts began to show their attacking intent as Modou Sougou saw his shot turned away for a corner. From the resulting set piece, Evian went ahead as Sougou's header looped over Steve Mandanda.

However, the lead didn't last long. Benoit Cheyrou had time and space and found the net with a long-range shot.

Mandanda had to be alert to deny Sougou, and Bertrand Laquait was called upon to make a save after Florian Thauvin had unleashed a powerful shot.

The away team managed to grab their second of the afternoon five minutes before half time. Thauvin beat the full-back and delivered a ball into the box, where Gignac was waiting to slot home.

It nearly got worse for the hosts as they backed off Saber Khelifa, allowing the striker to send a dipping shot against the crossbar.

Gignac lashed over a shot as the second half progressed, but Evian almost equalised when Daniel Wass's strong header was kept out by Mandanda. Wass then guided a late effort over the bar.
