Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that the coronavirus pandemic could force the club to put their plans to sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner on hold.

Jamie Carragher has claimed that his former club Liverpool may be forced to put their pursuit of striker Timo Werner on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Werner has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield at the end of the current campaign, having impressed Jurgen Klopp during another prolific season which has seen him score 27 goals and create 12 more in 36 appearances for RB Leipzig.

However, the shutdown of football as a result of the outbreak of COVID-19 is expected to affect clubs' finances and transfer plans, and Carragher believes that Liverpool may now opt against signing the Germany international when the window reopens.

"Timo Werner to Liverpool? It looked nailed on before the situation we're in now so it may affect transfers this summer," Carragher said during an Instagram Live Q&A.

"It may have to be put on the back burner, maybe for the following summer."

Liverpool are set to face competition from Chelsea and Inter Milan for Werner's signature.
