Preview: Cesar Vallejo vs. Magallanes - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Friday's Copa Sudamericana clash between Cesar Vallejo and Magallanes, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Cesar Vallejo will be looking to record their first win of their continental campaign when they host Magallanes in the Copa Sudamericana on Thursday night at Estadio Mansiche.

The hosts have only collected one point from their opening four matches and will not be progressing, while Magallanes still have a slim chance of finishing inside the top two.

Match preview

Cesar Vallejo ended their five-game winless streak in all competitions last time out with a 3-1 success over CD UT Cajamarca, with strikes from Osnar Noronha, Yorleys Mena and an own goal from Christian Mejia securing all three points.

Things have not been going so well in the Sudamericana for the Peruvians so far this term, with Vallejo only managing to collect one point from their opening quartet of fixtures, meaning it is impossible for them to progress.

Brazil's Botafogo were the visitors to Estadio Mansiche in May, and although the hosts scored twice, three first-half goals from Luis Castro's men saw Vallejo come away with nothing tangible to show for their efforts.

Sebastian Abreu's side are sitting in a respectable sixth place in the Peruvian Primera Division - steady form they have been able to bring into the group stage of the Sudamericana.

Magallanes come into this midweek clash having been unable to earn a victory in any form since the start of March - that success came against Always Ready in the Copa Libertadores and rounded up a four-game winning streak.

The Chileans have not played since their last Sudamericana matchup, in which a first-half goal from Felipe Flores cancelled out an opener from LDU de Quito to force a share of the spoils.

Sitting bottom of the Chilean Primera Division, Magallanes will be looking for a welcome distraction in this competition, although anything other than victory on Wednesday would mean they are eliminated.

The reverse fixture between these two sides was a thrilling four-goal encounter - one in which veteran centre-back Nicolas Berardo netted only his second goal for the club this joining in January.

Team News

Cesar Vallejo are expected to name a similar side to the one that was victorious in domestic action last time out, meaning Carlos Ascues is set to partner Renzo Garces in defence.

Stefano Olaya was sent off during his cameo appearance on the weekend and could be used from the start here considering he is banned for the club's upcoming league match.

Magallanes have a doubt for Wednesday night, with 21-year-old Simon Contreras being forced off at half time on the weekend during the draw with LDU de Quito.

Nicolas Crovetto came on after the half-time interval as a replacement, and the 37-year-old could be handed a tricky assignment at right-wing-back in this one.

Cesar Vallejo possible starting lineup:
Rabines; Gonzalez, Ascues, Garces, Quinones; Fuentes, Ysique, Vanegas, Velez, Ramirez; Palacios

Magallanes possible starting lineup:
Rodriguez; Poblete, Pinero, Berardo, Espinoza; Crovetto, Quiroz, Aranguiz, Villanueva, Zapata; Flores

We say: Cesar Vallejo 1-1 Magallanes

Cesar Vallejo already know their time in the Sudamericana is drawing to a close, but they should be able to put in a good display considering from impressive form in the Peruvian Primera Division.

Magallanes are looking to fight off relegation domestically, but the Sudamericana is offering a chance to forget about the worries of the Chilean Primera Division for a night at least.
