Maria Sharapova has spoken of her first Olympic experience and described the competition as "one of the toughest events".
The 25-year-old Russian claimed a silver medal in the women's singles by reaching the final by losing comprehensively to Serena Williams.
"This is my first Olympic experience. I mean, this is probably one of the toughest events, playing six matches in the span of eight days against tough competition," said Sharapova.
"It's such a unique experience for all of us. For me to be a first Olympian and to leave with a silver is an amazing accomplishment.
"Obviously it's always disappointing to lose in the finals, but it's great to get a medal, that's for sure."
Sharapova was chasing the 'Career Golden Slam' of winning all four Grand Slams and an Olympic gold, a feat in the end achieved by Williams because of her triumph.
