The 2011 Rugby World Cup kicked off today (Friday) with an opening ceremony at Eden Park.
A near-capacity crowd gathered to watch traditional Maori displays, light shows and projections, while a further 100,000 people lined the streets of Auckland to watch the celebrations on big screens.
Maori warriors took to the field, performing a haka while flames erupted from the sidelines.
All Blacks legend Jonah Lomu made a special appearance before the World in Union anthem was sung.
Outside the stadium, Auckland Mayor Len Brown welcomed the world to the city.
"We're so proud to have you here, what a beautiful day,” he said.
Elsewhere in Auckland, the celebrations were marred by the news that five pedestrians were hit by a bus.
The opening ceremony will be followed by a clash between New Zealand and Tonga.
