Edinson Cavani could bow out of Copa America following father's arrest

Uruguay forward Edinson Cavani's Copa America may be over after his father is arrested in connection with a fatal traffic collision.

Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani is on the verge of dropping out of the Copa America following reports that his father has been arrested in connection with a fatal traffic collision.

Luis Cavani is in police custody after his car collided with a motorcycle on Monday evening, killing its 19-year-old driver, according to Subrayado.

The source also claims that the Paris Saint-Germain forward's father was found to be over the legal alcohol limit when the incident occurred.

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez has confirmed that Cavani will continue to train with the squad ahead of Wednesday's quarter-final with hosts Chile but may return home before the game.

"It is a personal issue regarding Edinson who was not involved in anything but is nonetheless affected," he told reporters.

"We talked to him to extend our support to him. He is affected as anyone who would have such a thing happen to a member of their family.

"What will happen in between now and the game is we can assess how the player has been affected. The game is at 8.30pm tomorrow, not today, so we will train. In the coming hours we will continue to talk to him."

Uruguay reached the quarters as one of the best third-placed teams in the group stages, finishing behind Argentina and Paraguay in Group A.
