Jan Vertonghen will undergo a scan on Thursday as Tottenham Hotspur wait to find out the extent of his injury.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen will undergo a scan on Thursday morning to discover the seriousness of the injury he suffered against Sunderland on Wednesday.

The Belgian was forced off after landing awkwardly as the North Londoners endured a 3-1 defeat to the Black Cats in the semi-finals of the Barclays Asia Trophy in Hong Kong.

Speaking after the match, Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas said that he is positive that his player won't be out for too long, although there are fears that he could miss the start of the season.

"It seems like he twisted his ankle, it could be sprained ankle ligaments," Villas-Boas told Sky Sports News.

"Hopefully there is not too much damage as he has a good range of movement still, but it is swollen a bit.

"We hope it is nothing very serious, the MRI scan is positive and he'll be back for the start of the season."

Tottenham return to action on Saturday when they face South China in a third-place playoff.
