Southampton crush Aston Villa as Sadio Mane breaks hat-trick record

Southampton score six against Aston Villa in the Premier League as Sadio Mane nets a three-minute hat-trick.

Southampton sailed to a 6-1 victory over Aston Villa in this lunchtime, with Sadio Mane scoring the fastest Premier League hat-trick in history.

The home side had a goal disallowed early on, with Graziano Pelle wrongly adjudged to have been offside after going through clear on goal.

Mane scored his first after 13 minutes when the winger latched onto Pelle's header to tap into the empty net after the ball had ricocheted off Shay Given.

The Senegal international grabbed his second a minute later with another tap-in after Ron Vlaar's poor back-pass was intercepted.

Mane sealed his hat-trick, across only two minutes and 56 seconds, with a curled effort that evaded Given from the edge of the box.

Shane Long scored his first of the afternoon by striking into an empty net following Given's save from Mane's initial attempt as things went from bad to worse for Villa.

The Irishman's second came six minutes before half time, curling a 35-yard strike past Given to give the home side an unassailable lead.

Christian Benteke got one back for the visitors just before the break with a header from Leandro Bacuna's cross.

Long came close to his own hat-trick after the break, but his tame shot was wide of the mark.

Pelle got in on the act with under 10 minute to go, volleying into the roof of the net after clever play from Mane and Filip Djuricic.

The win moves Southampton into sixth place, while Villa's safety will only be confirmed if Hull City lose to Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon.
