Federico Macheda fires Doncaster Rovers to victory over Sheffield Wednesday

Doncaster Rovers beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 in their Championship clash thanks to a goal from Federico Macheda.

A late goal from Federico Macheda has handed Doncaster Rovers victory over Sheffield Wednesday in their Championship match this afternoon.

Jermaine Johnson had the first shot on goal for the home side but could only fire over. Atdhe Nuhiu then had an opportunity for Wednesday but saw his effort blocked by Daniel Jones.

Jeremy Helan then had a free kick at the end of the half but his effort from range was straight at Ross Turnbull.

After the break Miguel Llera went close for the Owls with a headed effort that was cleared off the line by Rob Jones. Minutes later Llera was denied again as he saw a header pushed wide by Turnbull.

In the 71st minute the visitors make the breakthrough through Federico Macheda, after the striker met James Coppinger's cross and headed in off the bar.

The Italian then came close to scoring his second but dragged his shot wide when well placed.

Richie Wellens was denied by Chris Kirkland in the final minutes as Doncaster held on to claim victory.
