Conor Coady fires Sheffield United past Gillingham

Conor Coady scores the winner as Sheffield United beat Gillingham 1-0 to move out of the relegation zone in League One.

Conor Coady scored the only goal of the game to earn Sheffield United a 1-0 victory over Gillingham in League One on Wednesday night.

Gillingham started the game brightly and threatened early on when Connor Smith forced Mark Howard into a save from the edge of the box moments before Ryan Inniss fired wide from a tight angle.

However, it was the visitors who took the lead in the 41st minute when Coady drilled home from close range after Chris Porter had struck the crossbar with a powerful effort.

Michael Doyle could have doubled United's lead early in the second half but he failed to find the target following good play from Coady and Porter.

Gillingham then piled the pressure on as they searched for a way back into the match, with Amine Linganzi and Leon Legge both coming close for the hosts.

Nigel Clough's men managed to answer every question thrown at them as they held on to move out of the relegation zone.
