Sheffield United ease past Shrewsbury Town

Sheffield United move out of League One's relegation zone with a comfortable 2-0 win over Shrewsbury Town at Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United have moved out of the relegation zone in the League One table with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Shrewsbury Town at Bramall Lane this afternoon.

First-half goals from Ryan Flynn and Steven Scougall proved sufficient for Nigel Clough's men to leapfrog Bristol City in the standings, who were held to a 1-1 draw away to Oldham Athletic.

The Blades, seemingly replenished after exerting 120 minutes in dumping Fulham out of the FA Cup during the week, started much the better of the sides and commanded a 2-0 lead midway through the opening half.

Flynn raced clear of the Town defence and slotted past goalkeeper Chris Neale, before Scougall established a two-goal margin in the scoreline shortly after and bagged his first United goal in the process with a long-range effort.

The visitors should have pulled one back on the hour mark, as Jon Taylor skewed his effort wide of the mark after being played through by Paul Parry, but Clough's charges held on and moved clear of the drop zone in England's third tier by a point.
