New York Red Bulls down New York City FC in Hudson River derby

Goals from Bradley Wright-Phillips and Felipe give NY Red Bulls their third straight Hudson River derby win over New York City.

New York Red Bulls have snatched local bragging rights for the third successive game by beating newly-formed rivals New York City FC 2-0 in New Jersey.

Having lost both Hudson River derbies this season, Jason Kreis's men - playing their first ever MLS campaign - set out on the quest to make it a case of third time lucky.

They started the better of both sides and might have moved ahead on eight minutes when Mix Diskerud fired straight at Luis Robles from a good position.

However, the Red Bulls - who won the first two derbies 2-1 and 3-1 respectively - opened the scoring on 22 minutes through Bradley Wright-Phillips. Kemar Lawrence drilled a low cross into the area, and Wright-Phillips converted from just outside the six-yard box.

Matt Miazga and Thomas McNamara spurned good opportunities for both sides as the hosts hung on to register a slender one-goal lead at the break.

It was one-way traffic in the first 15 minutes of the second period as City began to warm up, with David Villa firing wide just before the hour mark.

On 65 minutes, the visitors could, and should, have drawn level when Jefferson Mena headed Andrea Pirlo's corner over the bar from close range.

They proved to be costly misses, as Felipe Martins put the game to bed on 84 minutes to make it three wins from three against their Hudson River rivals.
